Lip fillers in Munich: What is normal and when should you be concerned?
After lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid, swelling, bruising and temporary tenderness are common side effects. But which reactions are part of the normal healing process, and when should you contact the treating practice?
The normal healing process
The lips are sensitive and have a particularly rich blood supply. Typical reactions after treatment include:
- Mild to pronounced swelling
- Small or extensive bruises
- Tenderness and a feeling of tightness
- Temporary asymmetry or slightly firm areas
Bruising can vary considerably: sometimes only small areas are affected, while in other cases larger areas or almost the entire lips may be involved. Even pronounced bruising can be harmless. The accompanying symptoms and how they develop over time are what matter.
Days 1-2: Swelling is often at its most pronounced. Days 3-7: It usually subsides; bruises change colour and fade. Days 7-14: The lips continue to settle, and the result can be assessed more clearly. Larger bruises may remain visible for longer.
Which warning signs should be taken seriously?
Most treatments proceed without serious complications. However, the following changes should be assessed by a doctor or an appropriate medical professional:
- Unusually severe or increasing pain
- Significantly increasing swelling
- Pronounced redness, increased warmth, fever or signs of pus
- Unusual whitish, greyish or net-like purple skin discolouration
Pain, particularly when accompanied by unusual skin changes, may indicate impaired blood flow and requires immediate medical assessment. Impaired blood flow can also occur without severe pain.
Vascular occlusion: rare, but important to recognise
In a vascular occlusion, filler material impairs blood flow. If left untreated, this can cause tissue damage, including necrosis. The first signs may appear during or shortly after the injection. The first 24 hours are particularly important, but symptoms may also become visible later.
If a vascular occlusion is caused by hyaluronic acid, hyaluronidase can be used to break down the hyaluronic acid. The sooner treatment by a suitably qualified professional begins, the better the chances of avoiding tissue damage. There is no guaranteed safe time window: if an occlusion is suspected, please act immediately and do not wait until the next day.
Can symptoms also appear later?
Occasionally, small lumps, firm areas, inflammatory reactions or infections develop weeks or months later. Changes that are new, worsening or painful should be examined.
Our aftercare in Munich: available seven days a week
At Aesthetic Munich in Munich-Bogenhausen, care does not end with the lip filler treatment. Is the swelling still normal? Is the bruise unusually large? Our patients receive a mobile number through which we are available seven days a week for questions, concerns and possible complications.
If impaired blood flow is suspected, medical help is required immediately. If our practice cannot provide an immediate assessment, appropriate emergency care must be sought. Sudden visual disturbances, neurological deficits or difficulty breathing require an emergency call to 112.
Conclusion
Swelling, tenderness and even larger bruises can be part of the normal healing process. It is important to recognise unusual changes early and have them assessed if in doubt. After all, patient safety does not end at the practice door.
